what to do with long guys hair for an interview

What's the best way to style long hair for job interviews if yous're a woman in your early 20s? Could wearing it downward make you look too young? Reader D wonders:

How should a xx-twelvemonth-sometime manner her long, straight hair for the interview procedure for a management consulting task? Is wearing it downwards and straight too young/collegiate? Is styling information technology with a curling iron too beauty-pageant/engagement-y? Just how conservative is the corporate civilisation of the big iii consulting firms? Must pilus be pulled back? Interview wardrobe all taken care of, and nails are neat and well-groomed, but what virtually long hair?

We've frequently discussed workplace hair, from whether long hair makes you lot expect young, to whether ponytails at the office are acceptable, to what like shooting fish in a barrel, maintainable hair looks similar, to work-appropriate upwards-dos. We've also talked about what your hair says well-nigh you at work.

For this post I was going to find a bunch of YouTube tutorials and pictures of women with interview-appropriate updos, half-updos, and long pilus. Only… here'due south the thing: then many of those look totally pageant-y, and on a young woman it's going to look even more like yous're playing apparel upwardly.

So here's my answer:  for an interview, your hair should be dandy, recently trimmed, and not something y'all play with. Ultimately, the hairstyle should be forgettable.

I hateful that in two ways: start, it should be forgettable for you —  in one case you lot do your hair and exit your house, y'all should be able to forget your pilus and focus 100% on the interview(s). No touching, no smoothing, no combing — no thoughts of "ow, these bobbypins are sucking my volition to live and when.can.I.get.them.out.please.God.is.it.now." (Ahem. Personally I detest bobbypins.)

Secondly, though, your hair should really be forgettable for your interviewer as well, considering y'all want them to discover your resume and your qualifications and your smarts — not your hair.

For an interview, your hair should be nifty, recently trimmed, and not something y'all play with. Ultimately, the hairstyle should be forgettable.

This is going to look a bit different for every person — simply reading through the comments on our last ponytail post some women noted that their hair felt "scraggly" if it was down, others felt like information technology looked "scraped dorsum" in a ponytail.

How to Style Long Hair for Job Interviews

So, for my $.02, here's my list of options for how to wear your hair for interviews:

1. Hair, Down

Hair, down, is fine. If you find yourself touching your hair, smoothing it, re-parting it, whatever — then think most pulling it back. If your pilus is super voluminous and it takes a bit of endeavour to maintain a swell expect throughout the day, I'd suggest just pulling it back.

2. A Half Upwardly-Do

Long hair, pulled into a one-half up-practice and then it's out of your face — see our options for ponytails, below.

three. An up-do

If this is the easiest for you to exercise, that'southward fine too. Just make information technology neat, comfortable to wear, and not too high — the fashion blogger'southward topknot or a messy bun (whether on purpose or not) is not likely to win yous whatsoever fans. Note that readers accept loved Goody Spin Pins in the by (particularly for curly hair).

4. A Polished Ponytail

A ponytail is fine — but it can't look pageant or cheerleader at all. I'd suggest you recollect LOW ponytail, if only considering I think people associate higher ponytails with cheerleaders — plus I ofttimes discover them uncomfortable to wear for long days.

I'd propose taking the time to find an easy, comfy fashion to make your ponytail look a SMIDGE more polished with one or more of the post-obit ideas… (you can also go for the Amend Call Saul ponytail!)

Psst: Below, observe some of our favorite pilus accessories for piece of work as of 2021. Notation that some of our long-standing favorite brands for quality, durability, condolement and styling include Ficcare and France Luxe. For more than affordable options (which may not terminal as long), keep an eye out at J.Crew, Anthropologie, Ann Taylor, and J.Crew stores (including J.Crew Factory and Madewell).

How to Style a Ponytail for Interviews

  • Use your hair to embrace the elastic
  • Putting a sedate, professional person hair accessory to hibernate the elastic (or using an elastic with a barrette or cuff built in) — I think the wait above looks neat considering the barrette almost matches her hair, and the hair looks very keen. Nordstrom has a ton of beautiful ones similar to the one pictured at top; I e'er think of J.Crew and Ann Taylor for this also — but your drugstore is fine as well.

Wait for ones that match your hair, don't sparkle, and are comfortable to wearable. Some quality brands worth the money include Ficcare, Fifty.Erickson, and France Lux.

  • Start a Gibson Roll – Make a hole in your pilus simply above the elastic and then pulling your ponytail through that hole — sort of like the outset of a Gibson roll
  • Twist the pilus around your face to requite information technology a bit of book before pulling it back, as illustrated in the YouTube video I linked to in our terminal ponytail mail service
  • Adding a bit of height on top of your head, either past teasing information technology or using a production like a BumpIt (or Jean at ExtraPetite's beloved velcro bump) — just be careful here!
